Historical trivia… Technically Roman state. The usage of the term “Byzantine” arose in the west because the mostly German-speaking western Holy Roman claimed to be the “real” Roman empire during the middle ages. They refused to call the other mostly Greek-speaking one Roman.. At the time the west called what they today called “Byzantines’… Imperium Grecorium… empire of the Greeks. After it fell to the Ottomans they still refused to call it Roman so adopted the original ancient Greek name for Constantinople “Byzantium” to describe it.

The Seclude empire was part of Alexander’s Macedonian empire divided between his generals. It was of course a Greek empire. Unfortunately today everyone recognized Greece’s Slavic neighbours “Macedonians” despite well knowing they are no more “Macedonian” than Hamas are the Macabees. They have turned into antihellenic founders of the Hellenistic period and nearly everyone that called them “Macedonians” unethically downplays it. They claim to speak for the past, and effectively lie in the present.
The Prespa Agreement is likely to fail because of these evasions since the national extremist elements in Skopje have no incentive to change their behavior. Unfortunate for them, and the antihellenic bigots that supported these extremists, the Greek writing on ancient Macedonian artifacts attesting to their self-determination as Greeks isnt going anywhere for their narratives..
