The difference is that criticism of Islam, Hamas and Palestinian rejectionism does get silenced whereas the Palestinian narrative gets amplified. I’m in favor of democracy and freedom. Hamas is not. If they were they would have created an open society rather than a police state.
Most of the students at these protests are woefully ignorant of the issues and causes to the point where polls show that many of them cannot identify which river and which sea is being referred to. It is unconscionable that Hamas should fire on both the Rafah & Karen Shalom crossing as well as the offshore aid pier, temporarily shutting them down yet these nonces blame Israel not Hamas for halting aid. That doesn’t negate their unthinking right to join a mob but neither should that insulate them from criticism or pointing out when “criticism” becomes hate speech and bullying. And while one can’t outlaw it, the mob that chants in responsible unison to hate filled incitement to outright demagoguery is more akin to the Nuremberg rallies to actual freedom marchers.
Where one can and should draw the line is at vandalism and seizure of public and private property. The public commons can be used to stage a protest but not for days on end. Blocking traffic and human passage is not a protected right ad nauseum which is why permits and a schedule are required. The use private grounds of a university or a shopping mall is at the discretion of the owners.
