Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the term used to describe the sudden death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that doesn’t have a known cause, even after a full investigation. In the U.S each year there are more than 2000 cases of SIDS.
Globally, SIDS is the third most common cause of infant death with a rate of 38.7 deaths per 100,000 live births, and in affluent nations, it is the leading cause of mortality among children aged 1-12 months, with most cases occurring in the first six months of life [2]. Despite ongoing research, the precise etiopathogenesis of SIDS remains uncertain.
