The Ashkenazi were never Hebrew speakers but Yiddish speakers. In fact, there were no people who spoke Hebrew therefore, it is very interesting how they managed to resuscitate a language that was already dead and buried! They feel very ashamed about their own Ashkenazic background but they feel so proud to consider themselves Hebrews even though today they know that they are 100% European according to their own DNA.
