As you know, the American ambassador is Israel is not the same level of prominence as the Micronesian ambassador to Chad. Someone that lives in a country with thousands of WMDS preaching to embrace Armageddon shouldn’t be in such a position especially considering the political conditions going on today, There are many other choices that could have been made in a country of over 300 million. Have no doubt his appointment will be exploited by similar Christian fundies to push those beliefs further along.
I can only speak for my views as an independents that currently pragmatically supports Nea Democratia (disagree with them on some issues but over all they are moving Greece in right direction) From my perspective. good and bad behavior can be found in a segment of every country. This doesn’t translate into moral parity on every specific issue but I am wary of national extremists that try to portray one side all good and another all bad. In the case of Netanyahu, I see him in negative light. He’s not as bad as say Golden Dawn in Greece but he’s still too far to the right as far as I’m concerned.
Even the recent events in Amsterdam illustrate his intellectual dishonesty. He portrayed the issue as a “pogrom” and once against made inappropriate WW2 fascism analogies. What actually happened was the Maccabees were soccer hooligans. They ended up in a fight with other hooligans. You can find video on Youtube of Maccabee fans chanting “death to arabs’, mocking the deaths of children in Gaza, attacking people, and vandalizing property well before the violence towards them broke out. And those Maccabee soccer holligans have behaved badly before including in Greece.
Soccer hooliganism is not limited to Israel of course. Greece has a problem with soccer hooligans of our own too. A fair chunk of countries have to deal with soccer “fans” that use sporting events as an opportunity to behave uncivilized. My issue is how Netanyahu misrepresented what happened which further illustrates his own lack of objectivity. He follows a pattern of exaggerating antisemitism then using it as political capital to justify his actions and to maintain power. What he misses is by constantly calling wolf, he undermines trust in accusations of antisemetism. In interprete him sort of like Jewish version of woke. Woke sorts cry racism when something has nothing to do with racism for cheap poltical points. I don’t disagree with everything Netanyahu says, and he’s nowhere near as bad as Hamas, but on balance I still think he a politically destabilizing force in the world
In any case, I don’t see Netanyahu’s personal flaws as a synonym for Israel and hopefully you don’t think you see far righgt thugs like Golden Dawn or far left communist Greeks as a synonym for the views of every Greek. One day Netanyahu will be gone and I still see lots of good things in Israel. So I continue to support closer relations between Greece and Israel despite whatever extremists our respective countries might have.
