One could reasonably argue that the small number of fighters Sharif Hussein
raised and the limited impact they had on the fighting relieved the British
of any obligations they had under their 1915 agreement concerning Arab
statehood after the war. That was the agreement the Arabs claim is
inconsistent with territorial promises in the 1917 Balfour Declaration. The
Jews, however, lived up to the promises they made to the British, the Arabs
quite plainly did not.
At any rate, the victorious allies and the LoN took the contrary promises to the Jews far more seriously, and for better or worse, that’s what counts.
