Passed by the UN Security Council in 1967, Resolution 242 calls for Israel to return “territories” captured during its defensive war of 1967. And then, return territories to whom– the Jordanians, and to the Egyptian occupiers?? You cannot tell the new occupier to turn all the territories over to the old occupiers that keep attacking Israel. Otherwise there is no consequence for continually attacking a member State at the United Nations. Israel has been a member state for 76 years.
242 calls for the second unambiguous clause, calling for “termination of all claims or states of “belligerency” and the recognition that “every State“ (the West Bank was not an independent State) in the area” has the “right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries” — Arab States had refused to recognize Israel as a State or its boundaries, and the state of belligerency continued. Now that you know what 242 actually means, I would like an academic response.
