Let’s not forget that Hamas was (and is) the legitimately elected government of Gaza. They are hugely popular among the citizens and would be easily re-elected in a landslide. The vast majority of Gazans are enthusiastically in favor of destroying Israel and killing every infidel “from the river to the sea” as they like to say. So are the vast majority of all Palestinian Arabs, and indeed most Arabs in general (although politics may dictate certain Arab governments temporarily keeping quiet about it). No plan that fails to account for that stubborn fact can be entertained for even the blink of an eye. There will never be a free and democratic Palestinian Arab state anywhere in the Holy Land, and the sooner the world gives up on that idea the better off everybody will be.
There is the possibility of imposing a government on Gaza. Perhaps a ruthless dictator of some sort who is able and willing to keep a lid on the place and won’t tolerate rabble-rousing. But I somehow doubt the rest of the world would like that solution very much, because Democracy is such a sacred thing and all.
There’s also the possibility of permanently relocating the Palestinian Arabs (all of them, even from the West Bank) to some place far away from Israel where their ability to wage jihad is severely curtailed just by the distance involved. But I doubt anybody will like that plan, either.
All I can say is that sometimes hard choices have to be made, and in some cases (like this one) it’s a matter of having to choose the least bad solution because no good one exists. The real question is whether the world has the courage to do that.
