During the middle ages in some parts of Europe you could be arrested, tortured and possibly even executed for claiming the sun rotates around the earth. The Christian religious extremists that ran various states in Europe at the time were even worse than the Taliban of today. In their minds they were morally correct but their belief was based on a falsehood. By today’s standards we would call anyone that executed someone else for pointing out the earth rotates around the sun evil. At the heart of it they meant well but they were ignorant of the facts. And their inability to tolerate difference of opinion kept them ignorant of the facts for centuries.
