The US intervention will not stop Yemen. Yemen’s goal is not to capture and use (or sell) the ships, but rather to deny Israel from using the ships. It will simply change their tactic from taking the ships to sinking the ships.
The US Navy has no capacity to intimidate the seawater from entering a hole in the side of a ship’s hull. They can fire every missile they have and the water will still enter. Unlike the USS Cole incident, however, ships that are potentially carrying chemical cargo are going to create environmental hazards that will themselves complicate Israel’s use of the shipping lanes.
Encouraging Yemen to destroy rather than simply capture the ships intact is going to be a decision that the US Navy comes to regret.
