Re: United against Israel: Time to end the world’s longest occupation

To be fair, the original Ottomans had an Asiatic appearance in art (similar to the people of Turkmenistan, Although today’s Turks have a Turkish identity their heritage is heavily mixed (including partially Slavic, Albanian, Greek, Arab, Greek, Jewish and so on.). The Ottomans became assimilators somewhat similar to Americans. To become Turkish you had convert to Islam and speak Turkish. At that point it was a short jump to fully Turkishness. This one of the reasons why Turks refuse to recognize Kurds is because their identity hinges in part on claiming Kurds “Turkish” since many of their Turkish historical figures were in fact Kurds..

Some assimilation is normal in all groups (including Greek and Jewish). The main difference with the Ottomans is that assimilation was one way. xyz to Turkish. Apostasy was a death sentence under the Ottomans.. That’s why virtually no regional peoples are of Turkish heritage (i.e. Asiatic looking) but Turks look like other people in the region.
