With the weakening of Hamas, the historical social structures will fill in the gap. With each war, intifada, etc., the Palestinian centralised power structure is weakened and the families, clans and tribes provide stability. They have reluctantly tolerated Hamas and its ideological holy-warring, in that Hamas was militarily stronger than any one tribe confederation in Gaza. If Hamas is also removed from the Rafah Governorate, these historical social groups will return to dominate. Hamas does not have historical context within the Palestinian history, but it does have, at least for now, the funding to purchase arms and enlist soldiers.
