I’m not like the self-righteous “human rights” NGO bs artists that pretend homelands are possible without showing preference to one’s group. I understand perfectly from Greece’s history what you are trying to do and some of the nastiness that sometimes comes with achieving those goals..
In Greece’s case our nation forming, out of the same former Ottoman empire as Israel, was very similar to Israel. except replace the world Palestinian with Turk. Turkish occupiers either leave or sent on their way to their 72 virgins. , There was no middle ground as the Ottomans wouldn’t have allowed a Greek state to exist unless we forced them out (see Kurds for a prime example of why force was the only option open to us)
A difference though is Palestinians have no homeland to go to. Like the former Yugoslavians and Turks in our region of the world, Palestinians have lived in your part of the world for centuries. It would be unreasonable for me to tell Slavs and Turks to go back to central Asia after so much time.
There are two fair options…
a. Equal rights for Palestinians as Israel citizens. This option is of course a long term threat to Israel demographically which is why I doubt many Jews support it..
b. A two-state solution. Do a population exchange like Greece and Turkey did back in the early 20th century. It’s not a perfect solution and not a guarantee for permanent peace but it allows you to focus on the economy and living rather than war.
Choosing option C… expulsion without a state… is just leading to headaches with the rest of the world for Israel, And for what a few scraps of land? Greeks fought for nearly 100 years to reclaim our homeland. We wanted Constantinople and Asia Minor back too. It took us getting mulched in Smyrna to realize that if we continued with this mentality of inability to compromise it would eventually harm our interests.
