Re: Israel will defend itself, Netanyahu says, as West calls for restraint

“self-described” Hebrews….

Even in the misuse of the term, the term has been monopolized and embellished similar to the exclusively “Jewish” Holocaust ©®™ term.

“Historians mostly consider the Hebrews as synonymous with the Israelites, with the term “Hebrew” denoting an Israelite from the nomadic era that preceded the establishment of the united Kingdom of Israel.

*** However, in some instances, the designation “Hebrews” may also be used historically in a wider sense, referring to the Phoenicians or other ancient civilizations, such as the Shasu on the eve of the Late Bronze Age collapse It appears 34 times within 32 verses of the Hebrew Bible. Some scholars regard “Hebrews” as an ***ethnonym, or demonym, while others do not, and others still hold that the multiple modern connotations of ethnicity may not all map well onto the sociology of ancient Near-Eastern groups.

***demonym refers to inhabitants of a particular location— ethnicity and “race” excluded — these are not one and the same.

The term has its origins is in an uncertain source.. It could be derived from the word ʿeber, or ʿever, a Hebrew word meaning the “other side” and conceivably referring again to Abraham, who crossed into the land of Canaan from the “other side” of the Euphrates or Jordan River.

Abraham is not exclusively Jewish – He actually predates the Jews (and Moslems and Christians).

Similar but different in meaning, but may both apply to numerous ethnic groupings.
