When the west was actually colonialist and imperialist… huge chunks of land were stolen at gunpoint from natives and directly annexed to their empires.. It would be fair to say hundreds of years ago the Americas was colonized by the imperialism of mostly the British, French, Dutch, Spain, and Portugal. Some (not all) western nations tried to do the same thing with Africa too (most notably south africa that was partially colonized by Dutch and British). However back then imperialism was not limited to western nations. China was imperialist. Turkey was imperialist, Japan was imperialist and so on. Trying to make it appear only western countries were imperialist is your own prejudices talking. Conquest was the norm for empires around the world for most of human history. In fact that’s how Islamic nations became dominated by Islam.. through conquest of Mohammed and later other Islamic conquerers (e.g the Ottomans). it;s only post ww2 has this sort of behavior has been shunned.
The US has so much influence today not because of imperialism but because of it’s economic output. Japanese is successful for similar reason. Same with Germany. Ditto for rising China. Poorer nations like to blame the US for all their economic problems but the real cause is usually themselves. When Greece had its financial meltown a few years ago I had to listen to these sorts of silly conspiracy theories from Greeks on the far left and far right. The actual reason why we went broke is we mismanaged our government finances. No one was to blame for that but ourselves.
