In a democracy as long as protests are peaceful they are a democratic right. If someone engages in violence, vandalism, looting, rock throwing, arson, and any other crime, regardless ideological beliefs, it amounts to soft terrorism. The protests in the US have been overwhelmingly peaceful especially when one considers the size of them. Campus and government crackdowns on peaceful protestors looks very bad on the US.
