Suspected Israeli airstrikes hit northern Syria outside the city of Aleppo in the early hours of Tuesday. The latest alleged Israeli attack came as Jordan hosted a meeting on reintegrating Syria into the Arab world.
Syria’s official news agency SANA reported around midnight local time that Syrian air defenses confronted the “Israeli enemy” outside of Aleppo and downed some of the missiles.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the strikes targeted the Nairab military airport as well as defense factories near al-Safirah southeast of Aleppo.
Background: The strikes followed another suspected Israeli air attack near Homs in central Syria on Saturday. SANA said those strikes damaged fuel tanks and trucks, while the Syrian Observatory said the assault destroyed an ammunition depot used by Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
Israel is regularly accused of striking Syrian, Iranian and Hezbollah military targets in Syria, though Israel rarely confirms this.
Know more: On Monday, Jordan hosted the foreign ministers of Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iraq for a meeting on Syria’s readmission to the Arab League. Syria’s efforts to reintegrate into the region politically after years of isolation due to the civil war are rapidly gaining momentum. Following the meeting, the countries issued a statement calling for foreign military forces to leave Syria, among other things.
