He gave cover to the crimes that Israel committed in the pathetic belief that he was being listened to and that he had some influence over the Apartheid regime.
In contrast, Trump, who is stronger and wants to re-invent himself as a peacemaker, is far too canny to allow Israel to run rings round him. Witness the pressure he put on Netanyahoo to do a deal with Hamas.
Trump has his own agenda and when Israel comes to him again holding out the begging bowl, he will act according to US interests, not those of Israel.
For one thing, an attack on Iran, which Netanyahoo desperately wants, is definitely off the table.
