Indian is prone to famines in El Nino years – probably because they rely on monsoon rains to irrigate. I was there in 1991/92 crops in some areas were a third of the size. It’s the tropics!
By the end of 1992 I was in S Africa – basically everything had failed there but it was mostly cash crops of tobacco so they were okay for food just down on revenue.
