Please remember that the people who today are known as the Ashkenazi used to be known as Khazars until they converted to Judaism in the 9th century and therefore they have been calling themselves Jews for only about 1,000 years. If you look at the list of expulsions of the European Jews out of Europe, they all happened after the 9th century – that is after the Khazars converted to Judaism.
