I’m old enough to remember the cold war. Back then the mujahidin in Afghanistan were viewed as freedom fighters against communist aggression. The mujahidin weren’t actually a single group. They were factions funded by the American military united by a common cause of getting rid of the Soviets. A segment of them eventually became the Taliban. From the western perspective perspective the big news of that era was the Soviets. Nearly the entire world missed they were arming Islamic extremists that would one day bring on 9/11.
At the moment everyone’s eyes are focused on Gaza. Erdogan is minor side chatter. The reality is Hamas albeit a threat for terrorism doesn’t have the firepower to be an existential threat to Israel. If Turkey gets its hands on nukes it will become an actual existential threat.
