Yep, English was chosen to be the official language because the vast majority of the population already spoke English at that time in the US, so immigrants from non-English speaking countries were forced to use it. On the other hand, Yiddish is a unique language spoken only by Ashkenazi Jews for as long as they have existed, and is therefore clearly linked to their origins. I mean, I hope you at least understand exactly what the difference is between the two cases, although I’m not so sure about that…
