In 1959, 3 years before Algeria would become independent, the French delegate who spoke at the United Nations gave many ridiculous reasons why Algeria should remain colonized by France and one of the reasons given was that the Algerians would not know how to handle their own government and therefore they needed France to be there to show them how. They also said that there was so many Algerians working in France and sending remittances – and therefore, if Algeria became independent, the Algerians would not have a source from where to receive remittances! Are you laughing? Most of the Arab immigrants who came to France came from its former colonies of North Africa who were brought to France by France itself as cheap laborers to help rebuild France that had faced destruction after World War II.
