The Romans named it after the Ancient Greek name for it – PalaistinĂ©. It was that before the Bible was concocted.
Sadly the recent Leon Levy study at Ashkelon quite clearly shows the people were the same mix as everywhere else in the Levant – a mix of Arab, Hamite, Turanid, Persian and S European. The latter were the last to arrive but well integrated with everyone else by the time the Bible was concocted.
Hanukkah? Sadly no evidence to suggest this is anything but a fairy story – probably more to do with the coming Winter Solstice.
