Iran has been sponsoring HamAss since 2007. It is very likely they were aware of the attack and encouraged one. However, I think this was not the main reason for the chosen date. It was a holiday as the October 1973 war of Yum Kippur. Iran motivation was to derail the rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Israel
