Well, the Europeans didn’t want them. They were hated for their usury, made fortunes during the Great Depression, buying valuable items for a pittance. People saw that and didn’t like it one bit, according to family who lived through it in Europe (Catholics).
ps. I believe that’s how Jews came to own a lot of great works of Art and probably real estate as well.
