Varoufakis is also popular on commie websites like Jacobin. Some liberal and soft-socialist pseudo-intellectuals in Europe and US also incompetently treat him as a “progressive”. His former party of Syriza is infested with communists. I don’t mean communists in the sense some conservatives smeared Obama. I mean self-identifying Marxists, Trotskites, Leninists et al. Syriza is not liberal. Liberalism is supposed to be about mixed economies not pure capitalism or communism. Syriza are communists that oppose capitalism. They have just learned to manipulate the language of progressives to sucker liberals and socialists into voting for them.
After Greece made a mess of its finances, our main socialist party Pasok realized they had taken too extreme a position with regards to government spending and agreed to government cuts in return of restructuring of Greek debt and bailout loans at lower interest rates.. Most of Greek left doubled down on their stupidity and start supporting communists because they didn’t want to make cuts. To this day the riots you see in Greece are virtually always far leftist and anarchist loser whining for government handouts. They act like wealth grows on money government trees. They blame everyone but themselves for their economic problems.
On the plus side our current PM Mitsotakis is doing a great job but he’s demonized by the “human rights’ defenders (aka leftists) for opposing mass illegal migration into Greece. The funny thing he’s mostly a liberal but relative to the Greek left he seems “far right”.
