What we can say is that 73 hostages were reportedly killed on October 7 or in Hamas captivity– Hamas does not deny this! As of 8 January 2025, 98 hostages remained in captivity. At some point, it became in the best interest of Hamas to keep some hostages in fairly good condition if they were going to exchange them for Hamas prisoners in Israel.
