The Zionists accepted the 1948 UN Partition Plan, and thus declared Israeli independence. It was the Palestinian Arabs who rejected it, because they wanted all of Palestine for themselves, started a civil war instead, called upon their neighboring Arab states to invade on their behalf, and still lost, being expelled for their trouble.
In that sense, they are not that different from the Sudetenland Germans, who invited Hitler’s army into Czechoslovakia, lost the war, and were forced out after the war. It is unfortunate, but pretty normal by the standards of the 1940s.
