People die in war. War deaths, including woman and children, are not a synonym for genocide. Although Netanyahu, incompetently, did his best to incriminate himself as a war criminal by publicly making analogies to “Amalek”, the genocide numbers don’t add up. Or at least not yet.
There are around 5 million Arabs in Gaza and West Bank. Hamas claims around 35,000 Palestinians killed. That adds up to 0.7 percent of Palestinian population. Compare that to the 50-75 percent of Turkish Armenians killed by the Turks that Erdogan claims is NOT genocide. Virtually no Muslim nations recognize the Armenian genocide as genocide but then switch up their definitions of genocide for Gaza. In other words, at least among Muslim leadership that throw around this term, they are unprincipled.
All the groups that Memo lists that participated in this study have the words “human rights’ in their names. “Human rights” Is usually Orwellian code words for leftists Large number of leftists are manipulating the terms “human rights” to mean a synonym for leftist ideology. This way if you disagree with them on any issue, they’ll accuse you of opposing “human rights” rather than an aspect of their leftist politics. This doesn’t mean that everything they say is wrong but any group that add “human rights’ to their organization name should be viewed with a strong dose of skepticism given this pattern of unethical framing by so many leftists.
I’m no fan of Netanyahu, but it’s only fair to criticize someone for things they have done wrong not just slander them simply because you don’t agree with them on some issue. Slander is what some politicians, like Netanyahu, sometimes do with their abuse of “nazi” and “antisemetism”. If morality is also a concern rather than purely self-interest, we have to use definitions in principled ways whether it suits our interests and beliefs or not. You can’t throw around the term “genocide’ without concern for consistent definition of it.
When one adds how heavily populated Gaza is coupled with how much firepower Likud has at its disposal, Netanyahu, probably reluctantly, is clearly showing discretion as to who is killed. Whether that’s within international law boundaries probably not but calling it the extreme of “genocide’ seems inaccurate.
A better argument to be made is Netanyahu seems to be trying a sort of soft ethnic ethnic cleansing. Targeting so much infrastructure and making it so hard for humanitarian relief strongly suggests he’s not only going after Hamas. He seems to be trying to make life miserable for all Palestinians so they’ll “voluntarily” want to leave then offer “humanitarian” help to relocate.
This clearly not the same thing as murdering millions of people in the Holocaust and Armenian. Genocide is what the term implies. a huge percentage of a civil population is killed with the intention to kill them all. Whatever way one defines something, changing definitions a-la-carte is bullsh-t..
