Years ago rightwing Orthodox Jew Ben Shapiro made a fair complaint that US universities were shutting down any debate criticizing Islam to create “safe spaces” for students. Today when it’s the Netanyahu government being criticized Mr. Sensitive changes tunes. It’s antisemitism and hate speech. And force should be used to shut down criticism by students. It’s unprincipled. Free is free speech.
Government level censorship should be limited to situations like someone calling for violence against a specific individual And even then there has to be leeway for context. Or where courts can prove economic damage is done to someone through libel. Or passing one nuclear weapons plans. And so. Real reasons not my feelings are hurt reasons. On a commercial level censorship is fine if its off-topic, spammers, and trolls but in terms of political discourse those that censor are in opposition to free speech. If we don’t protect the free speech of those we disagree with we risk our own free speech.
