Mustafa Barghouti, the independent Palestinian political leader, told the ABC the statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel intended to retain “security control” of Gaza indicated a new Palestinian government there would not have any meaningful power.
“They say they will maintain security – Israeli control, which means military control – indefinitely,” he said. “Then what will the Palestinian Authority be in charge of? It will have to be in charge of people’s food, people’s medicines, people’s education under the Israeli occupation. So he doesn’t want a Palestinian Authority, he wants a sub-agent for Israel.”
