He recognized one of the soldiers who had died; they had met at a kind of rest house the battalion had set up in the Gaza Strip. It was Maj. (res.) Aryeh Rein, 39, a tank commander in the 79th Battalion, 14th Armored Brigade.
During his service as a reservist, Aryeh had moved with his wife, Michal, and their three daughters to Kibbutz Mishmarot south of Haifa. But he never really got to live in his new home. He managed to put up a mezuzah and sleep there a few nights.
In the operation in which Aryeh was killed, his force was securing a “value” mission: movement toward a target in which, according to intelligence, there may be hostages. No hostages were found, but the Hamas cell waiting fired an anti-tank missile at the tank.
