Democracy at its heart is fair elections and the free speech necessary to ensure them.
Beyond that, it’s not left, its right, It doesn’t belong to a particular religion or lack thereof. It offers no moral or economic opinions on issues. In can be a direct democracy or indirect in the former of republic. And so on. It doesn’t even tell you whom should qualify as a citizen
The ambiguity beyond the basics is why there is so much variation of its implantation. And for the most part that’s a good thing since it allows you to compare notes as to what works and what doesn’t. The power of democracy isn’t the majority is always right. The majority are idiots. The power of democracy is it allows you to try different policies rather than be perpetually controlled by authoritarian charlatans that purport to have all the answers. Good science involves trial and error until you get things right.
