Those who follow the Ashkenazi rite are the descendants of Judeans who left the Middle East and settled originally in the Italian peninsula. Those who remained became the Italkim, whilst those who migrated northwards settled in German and French lands whom you refer to as “Ashkenazi”. There was, of course, no Germany until 1870.
