Judaism exists in multiple contexts. There is Jewish religion that, much like Islam, anyone can join. Then there is the ethnic group members of which may or may not be religious. There is a great Seinfeld episode where a recent convert to the Jewish religion acts like he suffering in the Holocaust that explains the difference nicely
