No worries Zev. I see you, or even any secular jew, as no less real jew than myself real Greek. As I think I mentioned before I’m a primordialist rather than modernist when it comes to history telling. Heraclitus is famed to have quipped we never step into the same river twice. He didn’t mean by this there was no river. It’s much the same thing you are saying.
I think most are primordialists because it would be impossible to report history in terms of groups otherwise since nothing is ever pure. The problem is many are unprincipled when it comes to reporting standards. They flipflop between primordialist view for themselves to modernist histography for what they see as their enemies.
The Palestinians are also part of a river too… Arab but they adopted the term “ethnic” Palestinian much like the Slavs adopted the word “Macedonian”… as a way to latch on to the land. They could have chosen a new name of even continued to call themselves Bulgarians. I might have even accepted them as “Macedonians” if they had actually cared about Hellenism but as they, and their apologists, wish to erase Greeks so they can play pretend ancient Macedonians were antihellenic Slavs, it was a non-starter.
Hopefully you can see a little better now why we objected to the name. It’s not exactly the same but there are many parallels between our two situations. It’s one of the reasons I support closer relations with Israel. Not only strength in numbers but strength in narrative.
