“The specific unit involved, the Netzah Yehudah battalion, was set up in 1999 to accommodate the religious beliefs of ultra-Orthodox Jews and other religious nationalist recruits in the army.”
MEMO still fails to understand. They criticize the ultra religious and national extremist elements on the Jewish side… then are completely oblivious that’s also what Hamas represents on the Palestinian side. Undemocratic holy jihadists rather moderates.
A population exchange and two-state solution would be fair. That’s the same formula that has been used to bring stability to other ethnic conflicts around the world. It might not make either side completely happy but at least it gives both a homeland to prioritize their own demographic and customs just like people in other states want. If someone wants to fight in the future, future generations can deal with that.
It would be a win-win for both groups to push aside extremists on each others teams to not only reach an agreement but have a healthy trade relations where both countries thrive. The extremist elements on both side won’t go away even if Palestinians or Jews took the entire region. They’ll just find more reasons for conflict with someone else. They’ll even find ways to oppress the freedoms of their own people. Moderates are willing to fight but prefer peace Extremists are willing to have peace if forced into a corner but prefer conflict.
