An interesting aspect of this armed conflict is the UN’s push for the combatant armies to provide humanitarian relief to the enemy’s population during the war. This is a relatively new approach. If applied in the past wars, it would have obliged the distribution of relief along with combat operations. The Allies could have kept many of the Germans during WWII from hunger. Also the long Iraqi-Iranian war would have made it much more humane to supply the enemy populations with relief. Even this war, if the Gazans, on the 7th of October, 2023, would have been required to bring relief to the people in Negev, then, the Gazans might not have been so ruthless in committing their atrocities. On the other hand, it is not clear if the Gazans that invaded Negev would have allowed relief to be given to the farmers in their villages and the youngsters dancing at the festival. But the UN had not evolved yet to the point of requiring relief for enemy populations. A beautiful precedent is being sent for our future.
