Voluntary relocation would only work if they wanted to move (which most don’t) AND if they had a place to go to. Is Rick DeSantis willing to accept 2 million Palestinians in Florida? How about Mike Johnston in his native Louisiana?. if not they better not be arguing for other states to take them… thus why they need their own state.
Part of the reason why Palestinians have latched on to the land is the very adoption of the word Palestinian to describe themselves. Prior to the 20th century it was a regional not ethnic designation. I don’t like the far right element in Israel (basically Jewish versions of Greek Golden Donkeys along with every other extreme nationalist in the world that behaves similarly dehumanizing to anyone not part of their team) but they are right that Jews and Christians also used to be called Palestinians prior to the 20th century. It was a geographic not ethnic designation.
One more Israel-Greek parallel for you… the Macedonian name dispute. This is exactly why Greeks strongly objected to the former Yugoslavians adoption of the Greek name “Macedonians” to describe themselves but Greeks don’t object to Macedonia USA. It was implicitly irredentism and has opened a perpetual can of instability in the region as they try to rewrite history to ridiculously frame themselves antihellenic founders of the Hellenistic period.. I lost my trust in alleged ‘human rights’ defenders and alleged journalists when they started to behave like the ethnic engineers of the Soviet Union on this name issue. I see it as widepread and mainstream antihellenism. Everyone knows they are about as “Macedonian” as they are “Athenians”… zero.
I used to be more in the Palestinian court. Today I’m more neutral and support improving relations with Israel in large part because of this name issue. I don’t want to dehumanize Palestinians but It has made me more sensitive to Israel’s situation.
