Not just Turks hate Greeks. A huge number of people are Greek haters including in the mainstream press and “human rights’ groups. . Many love the idea of Greeks… but mostly just dead ancient ones. They see the magnificent achievements of ancient Greeks and quietly think in their heads these lowly contemporary Greeks (Greece is second rate today) can’t possibly be related to those great Greeks. It’s both infuriating and patronizing especially when nearly all of them have less in common with their claimed roots than we do.
Many pretend to be friendly to Greeks but I judge by actions. Not everyone that called the former Yugoslavians “Macedonians’ had hostile intent like Turkey did when it was the first country to recognize them and lobbied to use them as proxy against Greece. Nevertheless everyone that has studied ancient Greek history for more than an hour well knows Slavs aren’t “ethnic” Macedonians as they now claim much less founders of the Hellenistic period. Its a giant lie. And the Greek writing on ancient Macedonian artifacts isn’t going anywhere to change that lie even if the entire universe ridiculously claims them “Macedonians”.
When I was younger I naively believed most liked Greeks given its magnificent history. The antihellenism became apparent to me when nearly everyone tried to whitewash the former Yugoslavians little swich-a-roo of identity into ancient Macedonians. Unless they are outright hostile, I tend to treat others better than they treat me but to this day I am wary of those that evade over their behavior (most of the planet at the moment)
