In the old days, the Ashkenazi used to claim that they were the descendants of the ancient Hebrews that were mentioned in the Bible but they cannot do that today because today there is DNA which has confirmed that the European Jews are in fact 100% European. At 100% European, it would be impossible for these Europeans to claim any ancestry link to the region. Instead of humiliating themselves walking around in Palestine looking very European and very foreign to the region and claiming to be the Hebrews, they would be much better off going home to Europe where they would not be distinguished from the other Europeans.
