Republican platform a preview of Trump’s Middle East agenda

WASHINGTON — Should former President Donald Trump win reelection, his party’s platform is an indicator of what his second-term agenda for the Middle East could look like.

“We will stand with Israel, and seek peace in the Middle East,” reads the 16-page document, which also calls for deporting “pro-Hamas radicals” and reinstating Trump’s ban on travelers from several Muslim-majority countries.

The platform is the party’s first since 2016 and was adopted by the Republican Party’s national platform committee last Monday. The nonbinding document, which outlines the party’s guiding principles for the next four years, will be put to a final vote during this week’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

The Republican convention kicked off Monday, with delegates formally nominating Trump two days after a 20-year-old suspected gunmen tried to assassinate the former president at his campaign rally in Butler, Pa. Trump, who is expected to deliver his nomination acceptance speech on Thursday, announced Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate on Monday afternoon.
