ANKARA — An Iranian ballistic munition that was detected heading toward Turkish airspace after passing through Iraq and Syria was intercepted, Turkish authorities announced Wednesday.
The ballistic munition was intercepted by NATO air and missile defense systems in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Turkish Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Iranian authorities have yet to comment on the incident.
It marks a significant escalation in the Middle Eastern war, as Iran so far has not targeted Turkey, a NATO member.
