Maybe they used different methods, but communists murdered many people in Indonesia prior to their attempted coupe in 1965. Thankfully, the coupe failed, and the communists were crushed as they deserved to be. communism is one of the most evil ideologies that anyone had ever come up with. We have seen how well communism works in places like the Soviet Union, Red China, North Korea, and other places where is has been tried. If the communist coupe had succeeded in Indonesia, the country would have been much worse off than they ever were under Soeharto.
Soeharto, however, had his own issues. He used the Chinese in Indonesia as a handy scapegoat whenever he screwed up the economy and needed someone to blame. Many Chinese suffered unjustly for it. At least Soeharto is gone now and things are getting better in Indonesia, but they still have a long way to go.
