The Ashkenazi are not stupid, they know that the chances that they originated in the Middle East is very remote just by the way they look. They also do realize that they have absolutely nothing in common with the people of the Middle East. But at the same time, they will never admit that they are a European people because that would immediately deny them the right to claim Palestine as the ‘returning Jews’. Therefore, there may not be more than five Ashkenazi people who would admit that they are a European people.
